The Rules are in my head
There are strong women and then there are stronger women.. meet one such strong head, Surbhi Manocha Chaudhary, a Harley Davidson rider in Madhya Pradesh, also famous as BIKER MOM in her city. How did that come about ?? Well, here is her story..
Born in a slightly progressive Punjabi family and being the older one of 2 daughters, Surbhi struggled with the “no brother/ no son syndrome.”
Went to The Daly College, Indore where the girls : boys ratio was 1:4 . Was always around men and learned to survive in the so called man’s world.
Fond of art and dramatics with the urge to do offbeat things. Took up horse riding at the age of 10 . District level champion. Once during a tournament fractured her hand so her mother stopped her from continuing the sport.
The always rebellious and daring streak got her started working in the family business as an employee at the age of 14.
Worked part time while doing bachelors.
Did a masters in Advertising and topped the university. Wanted to move out of indore, so went to Delhi to study at IIPM and then came her corporate career in Banking where she broke certain so called Urban myths like women can't do loan collections. Way back in 2008, that was considered pretty daring. But that came after she had already proven herself as a sales performer ( only woman in the team and top performer too ) despite being subjected to sexist comments like she could do it ‘cos she is a girl.
Then came the marital break, i.e. got married, had a daughter, Adya, and took a break to raise her who is now a happy 8 year old..
But taking a break did not mean she quit. B came a freelance corporate trainer and motivational speaker having tie-ups with a number of coporates and institutions.
Also working full time for her father’s business proving that both girls and boys can carry the legacy.
But being a career woman, mom, wife, daughter did not stop her from living her dream. In her own words
“ with barely any experience in 2 wheelers, having sat on my dad’s Java’s petrol tank. Always wanted to ride a motorcycle and today I ride a halrey Davidson street 750, after a small test ride of 110 kms, with the encouragement and support from my husband, Amit, and the daring of the Harley Davidson staff who sat as pillion to guide a woman who knew nothing but how to balance a bi-cycle.”
Not only this, she has a before 40 bucket list :
Done something new – twirling the hula hoop
Cut my hair short
Been to a meditation commune
Done lots of adventure sports
Worked with charity ( with kids with AIDS and parentless girls)
Had a drink with my dad , so he doesn’t miss a son saying cheers to him.
According to her, women should :
Know the laws and their legal rights.
Raise their voice against misbehavior.
Get married when they want to, not when people say they are growing old. And if they wish to stay single , do that.
Ignore slut shaming
Follow their dreams, live on their terms.
Know that :
Imperfection is beauty, madness is genius and it's better to be absolutely ridiculous than absolutely boring. - Marylin Monroe
Her fave quote in life is “The rules are in my head”, which she definitely believes in and follows in life. To know more about her, you can follow her insta handle happybikermom
